Ski Touring to Trollsteinen

The trip is demanding. You must have experience in skiing off-piste, and preferably tried ski touring. Avalanche rescue equipment is mandatory on all ski trips with Svalbard Wildlife Expeditions*

Price includes:

• Transport round trip accommodation

• Headlamp when needed
• Guide with necessary safety equipment

You need to bring:
 

• Ski touring boots* 
• Ski touring  equipment (skis, poles, skins and helmet)* 
•  Avalanche equipment (probe, shovel and avalanche beacon)* 
•  Warm clothing 
•  Cold drinks (preferably in a thermos as liquid can freeze to ice) 
•  Camera 
•  Warm jacket for the breaks  
• Backpack of minimum 30 liters
   

*NOK 450 renting avalanche packages 

*NOK 1100 renting skis, boots, poles and skins 

Equipment and clothing: Arctica

Join us on our most popular ski tour that is availble from early February to end of May. The mountain ridge forms a horseshoe around Larsbreen. At the highest point of the ridge there is a huge rock, characteristic and towering 850 meters above sea level, this rock really lives up to its name Trollsteinen.

You will start the tour by being picked up outside your accomodation and the guide will take you to our storage for a safety briefing and to talk about the conditions and the most likely route to follow.

If you choose to rent ski equipment, we ask you to send an e-mail to info@wildlife.no with your shoe size and your height so that the guide can prepare the equipment and save time in the morning. You will then be picked up 30 minutes earlier.

The tour starts in Nybyen and it is like that you can start skinning from the car. You will skin up a morraine landscape surrounded by the local mountains of Longyearbyen before you come up to Larsbreen and further ascend to Trollsteinen or Lars Hierta-fjellet. During the tour you will take a break and enjoy the silence of nature with a hot expedition lunch before skiing back down to Longyearbyen. If we're lucky, there will be powder snow - but it  can also be hard-packed and partly icy snow in periods.
