Description
Join us on a trip up the challenging Nordenskiöldfjellet, which is also the highest mountain that surrounds Longyearbyen. We start the trip by crossing moraine landscapes with interesting historical fossils and glacier systems and continues uphill through the steep valley which in summer are surrounded by rich birdlife. We then walk along a ridge with a impressive view both ways towards Longyearbreen and Platåbreen before we arrive at the last climb which allows us to reach the top of Nordenskiöldfjellet.
When the weather is clear, the view from the top over the surrounding mountains and the Isfjord is indescribable. In the summer, we find fantastically beautiful polygonal land up on the mountain plateau in the direction of Nordenskiöldfjellet. This is a collective term for loose surface structures with geometric patterns. The structures are formed by freezing and thawing of the upper layers of the permafrost.
On the way back, we pick up rubbish that appears on our way. Svalbard Wildlife Expeditions focuses on sustainability and nature conservation.
